When another blames you or hates you, or people voice similar criticisms, go to their souls, penetrate inside and see what sort of people they are. You will realize that there is no need to be racked with anxiety that they should hold any particular opinion about you.
~ Marcus Aurelius
This is an interesting quote by Marcus Aurelius, and I am sure you have heard it said differently by others as a “how you view me is a reflection of yourself and not me”.
While that is true to a certain extent, the quote by Marcus Aurelius is only useful and applicable to those who are leading a virtuous life.
And more often than not, if someone is using the “reflection” comment, they aren’t living what could be called a virtuous life.
And, it is being used as a convenient way for them to not take responsibility for their actions.
So, before you start dismissing someone’s concerns about your behaviour, make sure you are behaving the right way in the first place.
