Today in Australia it is Father’s Day.
To tell you the truth, I don’t know how I feel about it.
Like everything else, the day has become way too commercial.
And, making matters worse, the media is now jumping on the bandwagon.
I was reading one the other day where the father was gushing because his kids said “I love you” to him.
While that may be fine and dandy for him, it is something that is relevant to the rest of us?
I don’t think so.
My son is 5, and it isn’t the words he says that make me happy, it is the things he does without prompting.
For example, we know when he isn’t feeling well, because he usually wants me to hold him more. (He seems to be more comfortable being sick on me, than he does his mum).
And, if I am being really honest here, having my son throw up on me, regardless of how many t-shirts I have to change, means so much more to me than hearing him say something that he may not know the meaning of.
We are the ones who define the relationship with our children, not the media.
To all the other dads out there, happy Father’s Day.
