We are told that voting is a right.
Yet it is a right we have to exercise.
That doesn’t make it a right.
That makes it a chore.
Voting should be voluntary.
The more you make people do something, the less likely they are to genuinely be interested in what it is they are doing.
And this serves those who want to maintain the status quo.
Voting in Australia is also a huge privacy issue, because here you are, giving your name and address to a government body, because you have to. And that body then sells those details to whoever wants it.
A far better option is to make voting voluntary, and get people to vote because they want to.
Not because they have to.
Yes, it voluntary voting will come with risks. Though they are no worse than the compulsory voting system we have now.
