You want to know my attitude towards liberal studies. Well, I have no respect for any study whatsoever if its end is the making of money. Such studies are to me unworthy ones. They involve the putting out of skills to hire, and are only of value in so fas as they may develop the mind without the occupying of it for long.
~ Seneca (Letters From A Stoic LXXXVIII)
While the Seneca was talking about liberal studies here, the same could be applied to any area.
Should we really be doing something simply because we can make money from it?
Yes, I understand that making money is something that we do need to do to be part of this modern society, though that shouldn’t be the only reason we do something.
And, we most definitely shouldn’t be doing it if it doesn’t help us live a virtuous life.
